Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid remains uncertain despite his long-term deal running until 2030. The striker has faced a difficult season and has struggled to find consistent scoring form in La Liga since November. Chelsea have reportedly held talks over a possible move, while Arsenal have also shown interest. Barcelona are understood to be monitoring him closely and have reportedly included him among their main options to succeed Lewandowski, alongside Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.
During an interview, Araujo described Alvarez as a great footballer and one of the best strikers in the world. He added that elite players should be playing for elite clubs like Barcelona but made it clear that transfer decisions are handled by the club’s leadership, not players.
Alvarez himself has addressed speculation linking him with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, admitting he does not know what will happen in the future. He explained that while he is aware of the talk, his full focus remains on Atletico Madrid for now, with any career decisions expected to be made after the season concludes.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has also discussed the club’s transfer direction. He stressed that Barcelona should not obsess over signing a specific striker because the squad already includes attacking options such as Ferran Torres and Marcus Rashford. Deco highlighted Lewandowski’s status as the best traditional No. 9 of the past decade and acknowledged how difficult it is to find a replacement with similar numbers and impact. He added that Barcelona should instead focus on technically skilled forwards capable of combining well with teammates and creating attacking solutions.
There are still doubts over Barcelona’s ability to spend heavily due to financial challenges, but presidential candidate Victor Font has insisted that major signings could still be possible. He has said that moves for players like Erling Haaland or Julian Alvarez could be achievable if the club’s structure and finances are handled correctly.
Barcelona are preparing to face Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, with the first leg set to take place in Madrid. Araujo said Barcelona are currently in good form and training strongly, although he expects a difficult match against Atletico. He added that Barcelona did not have a preferred opponent in the draw and believes the team is capable of reaching the final if they stick to their football philosophy.
The team that wins the tie will go on to face either Real Sociedad or Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final in April.
