Liverpool advised to pursue top Premier League player as Mohamed Salah's successor

Ally McCoist has advised Liverpool to replace Mohamed Salah with Jarrod Bowen, while also warning of Trent Alexander-Arnold's impending departure.

Salah, who is in the final year of his current deal, has yet to agree to an extension, raising the prospect of a free move next summer. However, Bowen, an England international and West Ham captain, has been regarded as his logical successor. His steady achievements, notably during his career-best 2023-24 season, in which he scored 20 goals and assisted 10 times, have solidified his status as a top player. The winger's ability to cut in with his left foot makes him an obvious choice for Salah's right-wing position.

In an interview with talkSPORT BET, McCoist praised Bowen, stating, "If Mohamed Salah leaves, Liverpool should replace him with Jarrod Bowen. West Ham fans will be upset with me for saying this, but he is fantastic. Bowen is someone I truly like. I've seen a lot of people say he's too good for West Ham, but he's not because they're a terrific club.

"He is talented enough to play Champions League football on a regular basis, that is a reality. I love watching him, and he could easily fit into that club and play Champions League football. My top goal would be to keep Salah, but if he leaves, Liverpool should consider Bowen."

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding Salah, talk over Alexander-Arnold's future has increased. Reports suggest Real Madrid is closely following the right-back's position and intends to sign him as a free agency. Liverpool are eager to keep the 25-year-old, but the lack of a new deal has stoked speculation of his impending exit.

McCoist commented on the subject, saying, "I believe Trent Alexander-Arnold will be at Real Madrid next season." I hate to say that, but I like to see the world's greatest players remain in the Premier League, and he is one of them. I believe that if he wanted to remain, he and Liverpool would have reached an agreement on a contract by now to ensure his future at the club, and the fact that he hasn't leads me to believe that Real Madrid will be where he lines up next season."

While the uncertainty surrounding Salah and Alexander-Arnold persists, Liverpool will focus on sustaining their good start to the Premier League season, when the Reds visit Newcastle on Wednesday. They now hold a nine-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal and will try to expand it on Tyneside.
