Rey Misterio Sr., uncle of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, dies at 66

Rey Misterio Sr., the legendary Mexican professional wrestler and trainer who is the uncle of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio and the grand uncle of WWE Superstar Dominik Mysterio, has died at the age of 66.

Misterio's son, Miguel Aarón López Hernández, shared the news on Facebook.

Misterio began his professional wrestling career in 1976 and continued to compete until 2009. He did return for a few more bouts, the latest of which took place in 2023.

Misterio appeared in many Mexican promotions, including the World Wrestling Association. He formerly held the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship and the WWA Tag Team Championship with Rey Mysterio Jr.

In 1990, Misterio competed in a tournament at WCW Starrcade. He and Konnan defeated Norman Smiley and Chris Adams in the quarterfinals before losing to Scott and Rick Steiner in the semifinals.

According to Thomas Lawson of SE Scoops, Misterio founded a gym in 1987 with professional wrestlers Negro Casas and Super Astro. He also trained superstars like as Konnan, Psicosis, and Mysterio.

According to Ben Flanagan of al.com, Misterio was inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Dominik Mysterio and his sister, Aalyah Mysterio, conveyed their feelings to the untimely passing:

Aalyah Mysterio: "Eternally grateful for you Uncle, without you, my dad wouldn't be the person or fighter he is today. Rest in peace Uncle."

Prayers, condolences, and thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. The Mysterio family is also still mourning the death of Roberto Gutierrez, Rey Mysterio Jr.'s father and Dominik's grandpa, who died on November 17 at the age of 76.
