Why did Travis Hunter's father miss the 2024 Heisman Trophy award ceremony? The real reason!

Travis Hunter, Colorado Buffaloes' superstar two-way standout, is capping off his collegiate career with an impressive collection of honors. On Saturday, he got the highest prize of all: the Heisman Trophy.

Hunter's Heisman triumph surprised few since he excelled on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and cornerback. Hunter's success did not surprise his father, Travis Hunter Sr., who was not there at the event.

Where was Travis Jr.'s father at the Heisman Trophy ceremony? Here's why Travis Sr. chose not to witness his son receive college football's most coveted honor in person.

Where is Travis Hunter's dad?

Travis Hunter Sr. watched the Heisman Trophy ceremony from his home in Boynton Beach, Florida.

The elder Hunter chose not to travel to New York to witness the wedding. His reasons for not doing so was simple: he wants to witness his son achieve greater things in person.

"I don't want to go," Travis Sr. told the Palm Beach Post. "I want to be there when he marries and is recruited. I'm going to watch this at home."

Hunter's father will be able to accomplish both in the coming months, as his son's name will be among the first called in the 2025 NFL Draft on April 24. Travis Jr. plans to marry his fiancée one month later.

Travis Sr. elaborated on his argument, stating that the Heisman victory was to be expected.

"I really don't feel no different because I always know he could win, if he put his mind to win," he added. "He's always had that … since he started playing football when he was 4 years old."

Hunter addressed his father during his winning speech.

"I know you are watching television," Hunter said. "I love you, Dad." Everything you have gone through. Now look at your eldest son. I did it for you."

Travis Sr. was recently released from Palm Beach County West Detention Center, where he had been sentenced to 90 days in prison after being arrested in 2023, according to The Palm Beach Post. He was released three weeks early.

"I know you wanted to be here and you can't, but trust me, I got you," Hunter said afterwards. "I am bringing the trophy home. "I love you."

Hunter will play his final game for Colorado in the Alamo Bowl on December 28, 2024, after winning the Heisman Trophy. Following that, he will embark on a life-changing year as he launches his professional career.

Travis Sr. will most likely be present for the next major occasion.
