Liverpool fans criticize Arne Slot's selection errors in Champions League defeat to PSG

Liverpool fans have voiced their disappointment with Arne Slot’s tactical decisions after the Reds were eliminated from the Champions League in a penalty shootout defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at Anfield. Despite holding a 1-0 advantage on aggregate, Liverpool found themselves back on level terms after just 12 minutes in the second leg, when Ousmane Dembele capitalized on a defensive error by Ibrahima Konate.

Alisson Becker, who had been outstanding in the first leg, was called into action multiple times again at Anfield, while PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma also played a crucial role, making key saves. The most notable of these came when he brilliantly saved a Luis Diaz header in normal time, a save many fans considered the match's defining moment.

However, a significant number of supporters believe that Slot made two critical lineup mistakes that impacted the game. One fan posted, “Why Slot started Diaz and Jota is beyond me,” while another expressed frustration over Slot’s consistent choice to start Diaz and Jota in every game, even when not necessary. Some also questioned the lack of minutes for Federico Chiesa, with one fan commenting that not utilizing him was a “strange decision.”

Despite a valiant effort, Liverpool’s Champions League hopes were dashed in the penalty shootout, where Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both missed from the spot. PSG, on the other hand, converted all four of their penalties, with Desire Doue scoring the decisive kick to secure their 4-3 victory in the shootout.

With the defeat, PSG advances to the Champions League quarter-finals, marking their second consecutive appearance at this stage after reaching the semi-finals last season before being eliminated by Borussia Dortmund.

For Liverpool, the focus now shifts to domestic matters, including the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley, where they’ll aim to secure their first silverware of the season. In addition, they continue to lead the Premier League, holding a 15-point lead over second-place Arsenal.
