Alexander Isak Transfer Talks Intensify as Liverpool Push £130m Deal Before Deadline
Transfer talks between Newcastle United and Liverpool over Alexander Isak have escalated with just hours remaining before the summer window closes.

Negotiations are focused on Newcastle’s valuation of around £130 million ($176m), significantly higher than Liverpool’s rejected £110m ($149m) offer earlier this month. Reports indicate Liverpool had previously signaled readiness for a £120m bid, but Newcastle remain firm on their demands.

The Swedish striker has been pushing for a move, having trained away from the first-team squad since July and missing Newcastle’s opening three fixtures. On August 19, Isak publicly declared that “promises had been broken” and insisted that the relationship with the club “can’t continue.”
Newcastle responded with a statement dismissing claims of broken agreements, emphasizing that “no commitment has ever been made” to allow Isak to leave this summer. The club reiterated their stance that the striker remains under contract until 2028 and that they “do not foresee” conditions being met for a sale before the September 1 deadline.
Amid the uncertainty, Newcastle officials including minority owner Jamie Reuben and representatives from PIF visited Isak at his home earlier this month. The outcome of those talks remains undisclosed.
The Magpies have already moved to strengthen their attack, signing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club-record £60m (€70m). Additional bids for Yoane Wissa, Jorgen Strand Larsen, and approaches for Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike have either been rejected or unsuccessful.
Isak’s importance to Newcastle is underscored by his 27 goals in 42 appearances last season, which secured him the Premier League’s second-highest scorer spot behind Mohamed Salah. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Season on August 19.
Manager Eddie Howe has called for “clarity” around the situation, stressing that his focus remains on players “that want to play” for Newcastle. Howe noted he has not been directly involved in negotiations, leaving decisions to the board while he prepares the team for the campaign ahead.
Liverpool, meanwhile, appear well-placed financially, with estimates suggesting a profitable 2024-25 season under Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). This gives them scope to pursue a deal of Isak’s magnitude before the transfer window shuts.
