‎'I Could Have Been Sacked!': Pep Guardiola Reveals What Saved His Manchester City Job After Poor 2024-25 Season

‎Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has opened up about what kept him in the dugout after a disappointing 2024-25 season that nearly cost him his job.

‎By Manchester City’s high standards, last season was a difficult campaign. The club finished third in the Premier League, missed out on silverware, and endured a damaging spell of nine defeats in 12 matches across competitions at the end of 2024. Guardiola admitted that without the backing of chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and former sporting director Txiki Begiristain, his tenure at the Etihad could have ended.
‎Speaking to TNT Sports, Guardiola said: “I’m really pleased to sit here after a bad season. If I didn’t have my chairman and sporting director like I have, I would have been sacked, definitely. Because the results were really, really poor. It’s a new season, we’ve had six or seven signings between the transfer window in December and now. Football is this: win or lose, what’s the next chapter? The next chapter is this season and nobody knows what’s going to happen. We have, I think, the desire to do well.”
‎Guardiola’s record at Manchester City provided him with the credit needed to withstand one of the most challenging spells of his career. Since arriving in 2016, he has guided the club to a historic Champions League triumph, six Premier League titles, and multiple domestic cups, establishing himself as one of the most successful managers in English football.
‎The Catalan coach now looks to restore Manchester City to their dominant best. Following a strong start to the new campaign with a convincing win over Wolves, Guardiola prepares his side for a key Premier League clash against Thomas Frank’s Tottenham at the Etihad. Historically, Guardiola has rarely endured two underwhelming seasons in succession, making the upcoming campaign one of high expectation for City supporters.
