Jamie Carragher Questions Ruben Amorim's Future at Manchester United After Poor Run of Results

The Portuguese manager took over at Old Trafford in November 2024, but his tenure has been marked by inconsistency. Across 46 games, Amorim has recorded 17 wins and 17 defeats, including high-profile losses in the Europa League final and a shock Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby Town.
United’s struggles have raised questions about Amorim’s position, though Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS leadership group have yet to make a change. Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate with Sky Bet, suggested Amorim’s off-pitch qualities have influenced the patience shown by the club.
Carragher said: “The problem with Ruben Amorim is that he’s great in the press conferences, but because he’s not winning, people are thinking, ‘Stop speaking.’ If he wasn’t so charismatic and wasn’t such a good-looking man, he might have lost his job a lot earlier. When you look at the results, they are horrendous.”
He also questioned whether Amorim ranks among the Premier League’s leading coaches, highlighting comments the United boss made about establishing a system his players could execute seamlessly. Carragher noted that without immediate improvements, Amorim may not have the time to see his ideas take shape.
The former Liverpool defender acknowledged Amorim’s success at Sporting Lisbon, where he won multiple league titles against rivals Benfica and Porto. However, he compared Amorim’s challenges at Old Trafford with experienced managers such as Unai Emery and Eddie Howe, suggesting there are “a lot of better managers” in the Premier League.
Manchester United’s difficulties have extended into the current campaign. After finishing 15th last season, the club sits ninth in the Premier League table with just four points. The upcoming schedule offers no relief, with a Manchester derby against City followed by a home clash with Chelsea.
