Bruno Fernandes Injury Leaves Ruben Amorim Short of Options as Manchester United Squad Thins Further
Bruno Fernandes’ injury has created a significant challenge for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, where squad depth is already limited. The midfielder suffered a hamstring issue during the Premier League defeat at Aston Villa, adding to a growing list of absentees at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have shown signs of improvement under Amorim, with quicker ball movement and a more structured approach. Performances have been more competitive, yet results have not matched the progress, leaving the club outside the Premier League’s top four as the campaign approaches its midpoint.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe addressed speculation over Amorim’s position in October by stating the club intends to give the former Sporting CP coach three years to establish himself. League results, however, remain central to long-term stability, and United’s points total continues to trail the leading sides.
The loss at Villa Park marked United’s fifth league defeat of the season. Morgan Rogers proved decisive, leaving United 13 points behind Arsenal after 17 matches and three points off fifth-placed Liverpool, a position likely to secure Champions League qualification.
Recent form has raised concerns, with only two wins recorded in the last eight league games. Squad quality has been further stretched by the Africa Cup of Nations, with Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui unavailable.
Fernandes’ withdrawal at Villa intensified those concerns. The captain completed 89 percent of his passes and created a clear chance before sustaining the injury shortly before halftime. He was unable to return for the second half and was later seen limping from the pitch.
Diogo Dalot acknowledged the seriousness of the situation after the match, reflecting Fernandes’ reliability since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020. Prior to this setback, Fernandes had missed only three matches through injury in six years.
Amorim confirmed Fernandes will miss the Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle and suggested the midfielder could be sidelined for several games. The absence compounds issues created by injuries to Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, and Kobbie Mainoo.
Fernandes leads United in league goal contributions this season with 12, despite operating in a deeper midfield role. His influence has been evident in nearly every scoring performance, underlining the scale of the challenge United face during his absence.
Casemiro is expected to return from suspension against Newcastle, offering experience and defensive stability. The Brazilian’s attributes differ from Fernandes, leaving questions over how United will adapt during a demanding run of fixtures.
