‎Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri has reportedly entered encouraging discussions about a possible loan switch to French heavyweights Marseille. The highly rated 18-year-old attacker is keen to secure consistent playing time at the start of 2026, having found opportunities limited at the Emirates Stadium amid intense competition. A move to Ligue 1 would place him alongside former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood and ex-Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

‎According to The Athletic, Marseille are actively exploring a temporary deal that would keep Nwaneri at the Stade Velodrome for the rest of the 2025-26 season. While negotiations remain ongoing, any agreement is expected to involve a flexible loan fee that varies based on appearances.

‎Reports indicate that no option to buy will be included, with Arsenal determined to protect the long-term future of their academy graduate. The north London club remain confident in Nwaneri’s potential and want to retain full control over his development.

‎Interest in the teenager extends beyond Marseille, with several European clubs enquiring about a permanent transfer. Arsenal, however, have made it clear they will not sanction a sale.

‎The proposal from Marseille has caught Arsenal’s attention, with the arrangement viewed as beneficial for all sides. The Athletic reports that head coach Roberto De Zerbi has held constructive talks with both Mikel Arteta and Nwaneri, while the Italian’s tactical approach is said to be a key reason the Ligue 1 outfit are being favoured.

‎A final decision from the England Under-21 international is expected soon, as he looks to choose a destination where minutes on the pitch are guaranteed.

‎Nwaneri burst into the history books in September 2022 when he became Arsenal’s youngest Premier League debutant at just 15 years and 181 days against Brentford. Expectations were immediately high following that landmark appearance.

‎Last season saw him feature 37 times in all competitions, appearing to establish himself in Arteta’s plans. This campaign, however, has been more challenging, with only 12 appearances and no Premier League involvement since November 23.

‎Arsenal strengthened their attacking options in the summer of 2025 by signing Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, further restricting Nwaneri’s pathway alongside Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli.

‎He has yet to start a league match this season and has added just one goal to his senior total, after scoring nine times in 2024-25. Injuries to Saka and Martin Odegaard last term allowed him to operate in midfield and on the right, but those chances have since dried up.

‎With only 515 minutes played in 2025-26 and omitted from the last four matchday squads, a temporary exit now appears necessary to reignite his progress.

‎Although part of an Arsenal side competing for honours on multiple fronts, Nwaneri is expected to prioritise development over silverware. Marseille can offer Champions League exposure alongside Greenwood, Aubameyang and fellow England hopeful Angel Gomes.

‎Arsenal are open to allowing the youngster to leave before the winter deadline and hope a loan spell will see him return refreshed and ready to challenge for a bigger role in the 2026-27 campaign.
