‎Chelsea have successfully secured the signature of Sheffield Wednesday teenager Yisa Alao after beating competition from Manchester United and Liverpool. The 17-year-old has joined the Blues in a deal believed to be worth around £500,000, with further add-ons included. The club officially confirmed the transfer on its website, announcing that the left-back has agreed a contract that runs until 2028.
‎In their statement, Chelsea revealed that Alao progressed through Sheffield Wednesday’s academy and made his senior debut in August. He has since featured in four additional matches, including starting roles in the FA Cup clash against Brentford and a Championship fixture versus Portsmouth. The club welcomed him to west London as part of their long-term project.
‎Alao marked his departure from Sheffield Wednesday with a heartfelt social media message, thanking the club for a decade of support and unforgettable memories with staff, teammates, and supporters.
‎Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators also issued an update on the transfer, explaining that the deal includes a significant initial payment along with safeguards that allow the club to benefit from the player’s future success. These include performance-based bonuses and a notable sell-on clause, with all financial details remaining confidential. They stressed the importance of protecting the club’s long-term interests while securing immediate value.
‎Although Alao has only made five senior appearances, Chelsea view him as a long-term prospect. He is expected to begin his time with the under-18 or under-21 sides, or potentially head out on loan to gain regular playing time, according to The Athletic. Known for his attacking instincts from full-back, Alao debuted at just 16 in the Carabao Cup against Bolton and featured in this season’s FA Cup defeat to Brentford.
‎The signing reflects Chelsea’s ongoing focus on recruiting young talent with high potential. Rosenior and his squad are now turning their attention to their final Champions League group-stage fixture away to Napoli, as preparations continue for the next phase of the campaign.
