'Cost Us 10 Goals This Season': Van Dijk Faces Fan Fury After Error in Liverpool Defeat
Virgil van Dijk found himself at the centre of criticism after a defensive lapse allowed Bournemouth to strike first against Liverpool on Saturday evening. The Liverpool skipper miscontrolled a long clearance inside his own area, enabling Alex Scott to deliver a cross that Evanilson turned into the net to give the Cherries an early advantage.

The mistake highlighted a run of uncharacteristic errors from the Dutch defender in what has been an inconsistent season for Arne Slot’s team. The moment came in the middle of the opening half when Bournemouth sent a hopeful ball forward that seemed comfortably within Van Dijk’s reach. Instead, he misjudged the bounce, letting Scott collect before creating the opening goal.
Liverpool’s night worsened shortly after when Joe Gomez collided with goalkeeper Alisson and had to be withdrawn. Wataru Endo was called upon, but the substitution process dragged on. During the delay, Alex Jimenez struck again to make it 2-0, with Liverpool still waiting to restore their numbers.
Jamie Redknapp voiced frustration at the handling of the stoppage, questioning why the change was not made sooner. He pointed out that Liverpool were exposed by playing with ten men for several minutes, stressing that the coaching staff should have acted immediately to prevent further damage.
Despite the setbacks, Liverpool rallied. Van Dijk made amends by scoring just before the interval, cutting the deficit in half. Dominik Szoboszlai then levelled matters in the second half with a powerful free-kick, raising hopes of a comeback.
Those hopes were dashed late on when Amine Adli bundled home a decisive goal, sealing a 3-2 win for Bournemouth and handing Liverpool a painful defeat.
Reaction online was swift and unforgiving. Fans criticised Van Dijk’s defending, accusing him of repeated lapses and blaming him for numerous goals conceded this season. Some supporters questioned his reputation, while others took issue with his tendency to gesture at teammates after mistakes.
The loss ended Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run across competitions. Although the Reds remain in fourth place, they are now under pressure with several teams sitting just three points behind and set to play later in the weekend.
In contrast, their European form remains strong. Liverpool currently occupy fourth place in the Champions League league phase and face Qarabag at Anfield next. A win would secure automatic qualification to the round of 16, before a challenging February schedule featuring clashes with Newcastle, Manchester City, Sunderland and Brighton.
