‎The former Real Madrid winger spent four seasons alongside Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu from 2010 to 2014, a period filled with major trophies and unforgettable performances. During those years, Di Maria observed the dedication that has shaped Ronaldo’s legendary career.
‎In an interview with AS, Di Maria revealed that Ronaldo’s standards set him apart from everyone else. He described the Portuguese forward as unmatched in terms of discipline, consistency and desire, noting that his constant push to outdo Messi defined an era that made his quest even more challenging.
‎Ronaldo’s five Ballon d’Or titles reflect his success, yet Messi has claimed eight of the prestigious awards. Both superstars remain active with Al-Nassr and Inter Miami and continue to add to their remarkable legacies.
‎However, Di Maria maintains that Messi deserves the ultimate crown. He explained that while Ronaldo built his status through tireless work, Messi possessed a rare, God-given talent that allowed him to dominate effortlessly. For Di Maria, this natural brilliance is what ultimately separates Messi from everyone else.
‎The Argentine also addressed comments from Cesar Luis Menotti, who once suggested Di Maria should be ranked alongside Messi and Diego Maradona among Argentina’s finest players. Di Maria responded humbly, admitting he never considered himself close to those icons and was simply grateful for the kind words.
‎Now back at Rosario Central, Di Maria continues to follow the progress of his former teams closely. He believes Real Madrid currently have the world’s top player in Kylian Mbappe, who he expects to claim individual honours in the future.
‎Speaking about Mbappe, Di Maria said the French star has consistently ranked among the very best and now stands at the summit of world football. He praised Mbappe’s development and impact, noting that once he perfected his playing style, he became a decisive force in matches.
‎As for international football, Di Maria has ruled out any return after retiring in 2024. He feels satisfied with his achievements and sees no reason to extend his career on the global stage.
‎He explained that after winning the World Cup in Qatar, he had planned to step away but was convinced to play one final Copa America, which ended in a perfect farewell with another title. With younger players emerging, Di Maria believes it is now their moment to shine.
‎The 2026 World Cup will kick off on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Di Maria will follow the tournament closely as Argentina attempt to defend the crown he helped them win in 2022.
