Klopp Shuts Down Real Madrid Talk: 'I Don’t Expect to Change My Mind' on Returning to Management
Jurgen Klopp has firmly played down any suggestion that he could return to management, despite renewed links with Real Madrid. The former Liverpool boss, who stepped away from the dugout in 2024, says he does not expect to change his stance and has no real need to take charge of another football team. Now serving as Red Bull’s global head of football, Klopp continues to attract attention whenever a major coaching vacancy emerges.

Speculation around Klopp intensified again following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal from the Real Madrid job last week. Even though Klopp is settled in his Red Bull role and Alvaro Arbeloa has since taken charge at the Bernabeu, his name quickly surfaced as a possible candidate. Madrid described Alonso’s exit as a “mutual” decision and publicly expressed their appreciation, despite his spell lasting just over six months.
In an official statement, the Spanish club said Alonso would always hold a special place among supporters because of his legendary status and the values he represented. They thanked him and his coaching staff for their dedication and wished them well in the next phase of their careers. Alonso later responded with a dignified message on Instagram, acknowledging that the chapter had not ended as hoped but describing his time in charge as both an honour and a responsibility.
Given Klopp’s success at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, it is hardly surprising that he continues to be linked with elite roles. When asked about the Real Madrid vacancy over the weekend, he reacted with his trademark laughter before joking that perhaps some at the club had been watching a basketball game between Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies that evening.
On Monday, Klopp went further, making it clear that a return to management is not part of his immediate plans and may never happen at all. He explained that he and his wife are currently building a house and even joked about a trophy room, suggesting they would not be adding any more silverware. While acknowledging his ability to coach, he stressed that he does not feel compelled to do so until the end of his working life.
Despite winning the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool and achieving notable success with Dortmund, Klopp also downplayed his own reputation. Speaking to reporters in Leipzig, he said he never viewed himself as a world-class coach because he still had many unanswered questions about the game. He added that he rarely rewatched goals, preferring instead to understand the wider context of performances, believing results naturally follow strong displays.
For now, Klopp appears content in his current role with Red Bull. Although future high-profile vacancies could arise, it remains uncertain whether he would be tempted back into coaching or if his managerial career has truly come to an end.
