Manchester United to Reward Kobbie Mainoo With New Deal After January Exit Talk Ends
Manchester United are preparing to secure Kobbie Mainoo’s future after the midfielder emerged victorious from a difficult spell at the club. Once seemingly destined to leave, the England international is now expected to sign a new contract following a change in management that transformed his standing.
Earlier in the season, doubts surrounded Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford. Transfer rumours gathered pace before the departure of Ruben Amorim, whose exit has calmed speculation and cleared the way for renewed contract discussions.

A product of United’s academy, Mainoo endured a frustrating campaign under Amorim. He featured in only one match — a heavy Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town — before the Portuguese coach was removed from his position.
With playing time scarce, a January transfer appeared possible. Clubs across Europe, among them Italian champions Napoli, were reportedly willing to offer him consistent opportunities to continue his development.
Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager has changed everything. The former United star welcomed Mainoo back into contention, handing him a full 90 minutes in a 2-0 derby win over Manchester City.
Reports from the Daily Mail claim United are now “prepared to return to contract talks” with the midfielder. Any discussions about a move away have been postponed, with the club intent on retaining a home-grown prospect.
Although terms had been agreed last year, Amorim declined to approve the contract. Mainoo’s current deal has 18 months remaining and includes an optional extension through to 2028.
Amorim’s approach to the player had been heavily scrutinised, leaving many puzzled by his absence. The situation even prompted Mainoo’s brother Jordan to attend matches wearing a shirt reading: “Free Kobbie Mainoo.”
Carrick has long admired the youngster. Speaking to Rio Ferdinand in September 2025, he stressed the importance of academy players to United’s identity and insisted talents like Mainoo should form the backbone of the team.
He later explained that Mainoo is best suited to an advanced role, not as a defensive midfielder, praising his attacking instincts and predicting a bright future if managed with care.
In the derby victory, Mainoo played slightly deeper to give Bruno Fernandes license to influence the game further forward. United are bracing for midfield changes, with Casemiro confirmed to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The Brazilian will depart as a free agent, drawing interest from the MLS and Saudi Pro League. Uncertainty also surrounds Fernandes, who has attracted attention from the Middle East, reinforcing the need to secure Mainoo’s long-term future.
