‎Matko Miljevic Reveals Inter Miami Interest as USMNT Midfielder Awaits Potential Move to Play With Lionel Messi

‎United States men’s national team midfielder Matko Miljevic has acknowledged that Inter Miami have made contact regarding a possible transfer, a move that could see him join Lionel Messi in South Florida. While the prospect of returning to the U.S. is appealing, the Huracán playmaker says he is carefully weighing his options, with Argentine powerhouse Racing Club also showing concrete interest.

‎The 24-year-old attacking midfielder, born in Miami and of Bosnian Croat heritage, has spent his entire professional career in South America. However, opportunities to move abroad are now emerging as his performances continue to draw attention.
‎Miljevic revealed that Inter Miami reached out at the end of December, shortly after the calendar year turned. The MLS Cup champions of 2025 are actively planning their squad evolution at Chase Stadium as they prepare for a transition to a new, purpose-built home in 2026 under the guidance of David Beckham and the club’s leadership.
‎Speaking to ESPN, Miljevic explained that initial contact from the Herons was exploratory rather than concrete. He said he received a call on December 31 or January 1 indicating that Inter Miami were interested and considering a move, though no official proposal has yet been submitted. According to the midfielder, he was informed that a formal offer could follow, but financial terms were not discussed.
‎Inter Miami are not alone in their pursuit. Racing Club, one of Argentina’s most storied teams, have also entered discussions, presenting an attractive domestic alternative. Miljevic remains under contract with Huracán and emphasized his appreciation for the club after a successful season.
‎He stated that he feels committed to Huracán, highlighting how well he was treated and describing the past year as very positive. At the same time, he acknowledged that players naturally aspire to progress in their careers. Miljevic admitted that the idea of joining Racing is exciting, calling it a clear step forward and expressing enthusiasm about what lies ahead.
‎Interest has also come from outside the Americas. Miljevic confirmed receiving calls from clubs in Saudi Arabia but said his priority is maintaining the consistency he established at Huracán. He noted that such decisions require calm reflection to determine what is best for his development.
‎Racing have gone further than Inter Miami in their approach, with head coach Gustavo Costas personally contacting the player. While discussions have included figures, no agreement has been finalized and no contracts have been signed. Miljevic described the coach’s call as significant, explaining that hearing directly from the leader of a club of Racing’s stature makes the opportunity particularly compelling.
‎Meanwhile, Inter Miami continue reshaping their roster. The club recently signed Canadian international goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, on a one-year contract that includes an option to extend for another season.
‎The Herons have also been linked with Argentina midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who has endured a challenging spell at Real Betis. A move would reunite him with compatriots Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul, aligning with his ambitions ahead of the 2026 World Cup. However, Lo Celso’s potential transfer would require significant investment.
‎In contrast, Miljevic represents a more economical option for Inter Miami. His age makes him valuable both immediately and long-term, and his U.S. birth means he would not occupy an international roster slot.
‎On the pitch, Miljevic enjoyed an impressive campaign with Huracán, making 42 appearances, scoring eight goals, and providing eight assists. Those performances earned him recognition from USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who handed him his first senior call-up in January.
‎Miljevic featured in matches against Venezuela and Costa Rica, contributing an assist, and now harbors ambitions of securing a place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup on home soil. He said he believes he has a genuine chance, stressing that playing in the World Cup is a dream for every player. The midfielder added that receiving encouragement from Pochettino, an Argentine coach of high profile, has further motivated him as he considers his next move.
