‎'Only the Right Signing': Rosenior Explains Chelsea’s January Transfer Strategy

‎Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has shared fresh insight into the club’s January transfer intentions, with the Blues carefully weighing their options as they attempt to turn their campaign around. While the Stamford Bridge side remain open to additions, Rosenior has made it clear that only the “right player” will be considered.

‎The west London club’s hunt for defensive reinforcement has been ongoing since last summer. Under former boss Enzo Maresca, Chelsea were vocal about the need for a new centre-back following Levi Colwill’s serious injury and the failure to land Dean Huijsen, who instead joined Real Madrid from Bournemouth.
‎Colwill’s anterior cruciate ligament injury in early August ruled the defender out for much of the season, forcing Maresca to publicly acknowledge the need for reinforcements. At the time, the Italian coach insisted the club was fully aware of his stance on strengthening the heart of defence.
‎However, just days later, Maresca appeared to soften his position, suggesting Chelsea could explore internal solutions already within the squad. His comments led to some uncertainty over whether the Blues would actively pursue defensive signings.
‎Following Maresca’s departure earlier this month and Rosenior’s appointment, Chelsea now appear to be edging closer to the former Leicester City manager’s original assessment. Reports from The Telegraph indicate the club are ready to act in January after initially identifying defensive targets for the summer.
‎While Chelsea had planned to offload at least one defender before adding a new face, the report suggests they are prepared to adjust that strategy if a suitable opportunity arises. Ball-playing centre-backs are high on the club’s shortlist, with Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet and Jacobo Ramon both linked. Chelsea are also believed to be seeking at least one midfielder and a flexible attacking option in 2026.
‎Speaking to the media on Thursday, Rosenior emphasised caution and evaluation before committing to any signings. He highlighted the importance of giving current players the chance to impress while maintaining ongoing dialogue with the club’s hierarchy regarding both incoming and outgoing transfers.
‎Beyond recruitment, Rosenior has quickly turned his attention to immediate challenges on the pitch. In a matter of days, he has overseen an FA Cup victory against Charlton Athletic and a narrow 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
‎Chelsea’s next assignment comes against an in-form Brentford side currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, two points ahead of the Blues. Despite Chelsea’s historical advantage on paper, Rosenior is under no illusions about the task ahead.
‎The head coach praised Brentford’s organisation, set-piece strength, and collective mentality, noting their discipline across all phases of play. He stressed that Chelsea must reach a very high performance level to secure a positive result this weekend.
‎Another area Rosenior is keen to improve is Chelsea’s home form. The Blues currently rank 13th in the league’s home table, having won just four of their 10 matches at Stamford Bridge.
‎Rosenior has made it clear that past results will not dictate his approach. His focus is on intensity, tempo, and making Stamford Bridge an intimidating venue once again. He also highlighted the need for better concentration during defensive set-piece situations, referencing recent goals conceded from corners, throw-ins, and free-kicks.
‎With patience in the transfer market and renewed emphasis on fundamentals, Chelsea’s new era under Rosenior is beginning to take shape.
