‎'Really Good Energy': Chelsea U21s Coach Calum McFarlane Embraces Interim Role After Maresca Exit Ahead of Man City Test

‎Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane has shared his enthusiasm after stepping into the role following Enzo Maresca’s sudden departure on New Year’s Day. The 40-year-old, who normally oversees Chelsea’s Under-21s, will take charge from the touchline as the Blues travel to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

‎McFarlane Takes Over After Maresca Departure
‎Enzo Maresca’s tenure at Stamford Bridge came to an abrupt end after relations with the club deteriorated significantly by mid-December. The Italian manager had publicly described a period as the “worst 48 hours” of his time at Chelsea since arriving from Leicester City. A lack of consistency and a run of three games without a win ultimately led to his exit, with Chelsea now actively searching for a permanent successor.
‎Until that appointment is made, McFarlane has been handed interim responsibility, beginning with one of the toughest possible assignments away at Manchester City.
‎‘A Really Strong Culture at Chelsea’
‎Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s encounter, McFarlane described the last day as intense but positive. He admitted the experience had been a whirlwind, yet also enjoyable and exciting, stressing that he felt optimistic about the opportunity.
‎He highlighted the strong culture within the club, pointing to support from first-team staff, directors and the continued presence of academy figures around the senior setup. McFarlane noted that training had been lively, with a noticeable sense of energy, focus and motivation among the players.
‎The interim coach praised the squad’s attitude, describing them as driven and hungry ahead of the weekend. He also singled out Reece James for his leadership, crediting the captain for helping guide both players and staff as preparations continued for the clash at the Etihad Stadium.
‎Focused on Chelsea, Not Guardiola
‎McFarlane is set to face Pep Guardiola, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest managers following his success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Guardiola has helped City recover momentum after a challenging 2024-25 season, although they remain four points behind league leaders Arsenal after a goalless draw with Sunderland.
‎Despite the high-profile nature of the encounter, McFarlane played down the personal significance of standing opposite Guardiola. He insisted the match is about Chelsea versus City, not individual managers, and stressed that his main responsibility is ensuring his players are ready to compete.
‎The interim boss said he feels calm about the challenge, admitting nerves may increase closer to kick-off. He also downplayed any attention surrounding his sudden promotion, stating his focus remains on daily work rather than external noise.
‎While acknowledging City’s quality, form and elite coaching, McFarlane maintained confidence in his own squad and rejected the idea that Chelsea are entering the game with nothing to lose.
‎Chelsea Continue Search for Permanent Manager
‎Chelsea are not expected to delay their hunt for a new head coach, with Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading candidate to replace Maresca. The former Fulham and Reading defender has been in charge of his Ligue 1 side since July 2024 and guided them into the Conference League during his first season.
‎A demanding run of fixtures awaits the Blues during this transitional period. After Sunday’s trip to Manchester City, Chelsea face Fulham in a London derby, followed by another against Charlton in the FA Cup. They are also set for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal, alongside January meetings with Brentford, Pafos, Crystal Palace, Napoli and West Ham.
