Tottenham Plan to Sign Liverpool Left-Back as Defensive Cover
Tottenham Hotspur are actively pursuing a deal to bring Andy Robertson from Liverpool to north London. Initially earmarked as a summer target, Spurs had anticipated competing with other clubs for the Scotland international when his contract ends on June 30. However, the transfer has been accelerated to provide immediate reinforcement for head coach Thomas Frank’s squad. Negotiations are reportedly amicable as Tottenham aim to secure the 31-year-old left-back.

Robertson would contribute significant experience, leadership, and character to a Tottenham side struggling domestically but performing better in the Champions League, currently sitting fifth ahead of the final group stage fixtures next Wednesday.
At Liverpool, Robertson has fallen behind new summer signing Milos Kerkez. Although his exit could leave the club short in the left-back position, Liverpool have the option of recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma. Atletico Madrid had sought left-side defensive reinforcements after the departures of Reinildo and Cesar Azpilicueta but chose instead to sign Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta.
When asked about his future, Robertson expressed a desire to stay but emphasized his need for regular game time. “I’ve got five months left, and we need to see the options to stay or move. I need to discuss it with my family,” he explained. He also highlighted his recent World Cup qualification with Scotland and the importance of playing time leading into the tournament.
The relationship between Robertson and Liverpool is strong, and any potential move would be handled respectfully. Both sides are expected to prioritize each other’s interests, ensuring that if a transfer occurs, it will be on good terms. Robertson is set to captain Scotland at the upcoming World Cup, the nation’s first appearance since 1998, making playing minutes a key factor in his decision.
This season, Robertson has made 21 appearances in all competitions but started only four Premier League games due to Kerkez’s arrival from Bournemouth. At Tottenham, Destiny Udogie has been the preferred left-back since 2023 but has featured in just 10 Premier League matches this season due to injury. Djed Spence, usually a right-back, has deputized on the left, while Archie Gray, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies have also filled in. Davies recently confirmed he would undergo ankle surgery, and Spurs added 19-year-old Souza from Santos to bolster the position.
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, amassing 363 appearances, 12 goals, and 68 assists while winning two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League. Remembered as one of Liverpool’s finest left-backs, he became a key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s era, blending attacking runs with defensive discipline and leadership.
Although Robertson’s pace has diminished over time, his leadership remains invaluable. Even as a backup, he has maintained professionalism, speaking fondly of his relationship with Liverpool’s management. With Kerkez settling into the starting role, Robertson’s opportunities at Anfield were limited, making a move to Tottenham appealing.
Liverpool would initially lack cover at left-back, potentially prompting discussions with Roma to recall Tsimikas temporarily. Ultimately, Liverpool will need to sign another left-back either in this window or the summer. Tottenham’s pursuit of Robertson highlights their need for experienced players to guide a squad that has struggled with injuries and the loss of senior figures. Robertson’s presence could significantly uplift Spurs’ standards on and off the pitch for the remainder of the season and beyond.
