Unhappy in London: Cole Palmer Could Leave Chelsea for Manchester City This Summer
Questions are growing around Cole Palmer’s future at Chelsea after fresh claims emerged suggesting the forward is not particularly enjoying his life in London and could explore a return to Manchester City in the next transfer window.
The situation is closely linked to Pep Guardiola’s uncertain future at the Etihad, with strong indications the City manager could part ways with the club at the end of the season. Such a move may reopen the door for Palmer to make a dramatic return to his boyhood side.

Palmer left Manchester City in 2023 after feeling his chances were limited. Speaking to British GQ at the time, he admitted: “I just knew I wasn’t going to play as much as I wanted to.” His move to Chelsea has been highly successful, with the midfielder playing a pivotal role in winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup.
Despite his achievements, reports from The Sun indicate Palmer is unsettled in the capital and misses life back in Manchester. Born in Wythenshawe and developed through City’s academy, the England international is believed to be open to rejoining the club if Guardiola departs and Enzo Maresca is appointed as the new head coach.
Maresca’s name has already been linked with City following his dismissal from Chelsea at the start of 2026. It later emerged that he had informed the club on three occasions that he had spoken with Manchester City. His exit was confirmed on New Year’s Day, ending an 18-month spell in charge.
Guardiola addressed the speculation earlier in the year, firmly stating he remains under contract and intends to continue fighting with his team. “I have one more year on my contract… I like to be here,” he told reporters, while dismissing talk of Maresca’s involvement as mere rumour.
City’s recent downturn in form has intensified the debate. A Champions League defeat to Bodo/Glimt followed Saturday’s loss to Manchester United, prompting pundit Richard Keys to suggest Guardiola’s departure could be imminent. He even speculated the Spaniard might leave this week, paving the way for Maresca to take charge against Wolves.
Chelsea, however, have already taken steps to protect their prized asset. Palmer signed an extension in 2024 that ties him to the club until 2033. While he has battled injuries and struggled to rediscover peak form this season, he remains central to Chelsea’s plans. Whether the Blues would consider selling if City come calling for their former academy graduate remains to be seen.
