‎'You Never Know What Tomorrow Brings': Liam Rosenior Addresses Chelsea Speculation After Enzo Maresca Exit

‎Liam Rosenior has broken his silence after emerging as a leading contender to replace Enzo Maresca as Chelsea head coach. Maresca was relieved of his duties on New Year’s Day, prompting Chelsea to begin the process of appointing a new manager, with Rosenior widely viewed as the frontrunner at this stage. The 41-year-old has spent more than a year in charge of Strasbourg and guided the club into the UEFA Conference League during his debut campaign.

‎Chelsea made a decisive move to dismiss Maresca at the start of the year following a rapid breakdown in relations between the Italian coach and the club’s hierarchy over recent weeks. The decision marked the end of Maresca’s tenure at Stamford Bridge after delivering silverware earlier in his spell.
‎In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed the separation, thanking Maresca for leading the team to success in both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. The club highlighted that, with major targets still achievable across four competitions, both parties felt a managerial change offered the best opportunity to realign the season. Maresca was also wished well in his future career.
‎Attention quickly turned to Rosenior, who has unexpectedly become the favourite for the Chelsea vacancy. The former Fulham and Reading defender currently manages Strasbourg, another club operating under BlueCo ownership. He has steered the Ligue 1 side to seventh place in the table ahead of their upcoming away fixture against Nice.
‎Chelsea’s announcement came just before Strasbourg’s return from the winter break. Their last competitive outing was a 2-1 Coupe de France victory over Dunkerque shortly before Christmas. Speaking ahead of the Nice match, Rosenior played down the rumours linking him to Chelsea and described them as speculation, stressing his commitment to his current responsibilities.
‎Rosenior made clear that his focus remains solely on preparing Strasbourg for their next game. He acknowledged the external noise but insisted that engaging with speculation would distract from his duties. He explained that he has not addressed the situation with his players, aside from some light-hearted remarks, as the squad remains concentrated on their objectives with the club.
‎Reflecting more broadly, Rosenior stated that football and life offer no certainties. He noted that while he is enjoying his role and has a strong connection with Strasbourg, no one can predict what the future holds. For now, he reiterated that he is the manager of Strasbourg and fully committed to his position, while also acknowledging the shared ownership structure between the clubs naturally leads to internal communication.
‎Chelsea’s managerial search has seen several prominent names linked with the role, although figures such as Cesc Fàbregas, Oliver Glasner and Francesco Farioli have reportedly been ruled out. Short-lived speculation also connected Champions League-winning managers Zinedine Zidane and Jürgen Klopp with the vacancy, but neither aligns with the current strategic approach at Stamford Bridge.
‎As the club continues its search for a permanent head coach, Chelsea’s Under-21s manager Calum McFarlane will oversee the first team for their challenging Premier League trip to Manchester City. The 40-year-old described the period following Maresca’s exit as hectic and expressed enthusiasm about leading the squad at the Etihad Stadium.
