The Swedish forward, who became Liverpool’s record signing, required surgery after sustaining a broken leg in a clash with Tottenham Hotspur on December 20. Despite the severity of the injury, his season has not been ruled out, with steady progress reported during rehabilitation.

Isak underwent an operation to repair fractures to his fibula and ankle. The 26-year-old had joined Liverpool FC from Newcastle United in the summer of 2025 for a British-record £125 million ($168m). Arriving at Anfield without the benefit of a full pre-season, he spent much of the campaign trying to reach peak fitness.
His setback occurred following a heavy challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven, which resulted in the fractures that ultimately required surgical intervention.
After two months out of action, Isak has advanced to light training. He is being carefully reintegrated, with the club determined not to rush his comeback.
Slot revealed that the striker has returned to the pitch for running sessions, though not yet in football boots. While he avoided confirming a precise timeline, he indicated that, if all continues smoothly, Isak could rejoin group training toward the end of March or early April. However, he cautioned that returning to training does not immediately equate to being ready to feature in matches.
The manager explained that injured players continue daily rehabilitation and gym work even before stepping back onto the pitch. He emphasized that reaching this phase represents the latter stages of recovery, with ball work the next milestone before eventually rejoining the squad. Slot praised both Isak’s dedication and the medical team for the positive progress made.
Prior to his injury, Isak scored three goals in 16 appearances. Liverpool remain confident that the substantial transfer investment will be justified once he regains full sharpness.
Slot acknowledged that the forward has endured a challenging period. Joining a new club without several months of proper team training made it difficult to immediately demonstrate his full capabilities in the demanding Premier League environment. With a packed fixture schedule and minimal training time, it was always expected that he would need months to reach his best level.
The injury was particularly unfortunate given signs of improvement, including goals against West Ham United and Tottenham, which indicated he was rediscovering the form he displayed at Newcastle.
Liverpool may benefit from his timely return as they approach the decisive stretch of the campaign. The Reds remain contenders in both the FA Cup and Champions League while battling to secure a top-four Premier League finish. Their next league fixture sees them travel to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
