With the January window approaching its deadline, reports began circulating that Fernandes could leave Old Trafford before the end of the month. Romano, however, has described those claims as “completely fake” and made it clear that no such move is under consideration.
The rumours stemmed from British media reports suggesting that some within Manchester United believed Fernandes had grown frustrated and was ready to move on. Spanish outlets then intensified the speculation by alleging the midfielder had already contacted Real Madrid directly.
Romano addressed the situation on his YouTube channel, insisting that Fernandes never offered himself to Los Blancos and that the story has no foundation. According to Romano, nothing regarding Fernandes’ future is happening during the January window.
On the pitch, Fernandes has thrived in a more advanced attacking role since Michael Carrick took charge as head coach. His influence has been crucial as United have climbed into serious contention for a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League.
The Portugal international’s contract runs until 2027, with an option for an extra year, reinforcing United’s strong position. Despite this, there has been ongoing speculation about a possible exit next summer, with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer mentioned as a potential successor in a deal that could break British transfer records.
Romano confirmed that while Real Madrid are not involved, interest from Saudi Arabia is longstanding. He revealed that Saudi clubs have pursued Fernandes for the past three years, but the player has repeatedly turned them down.
No new offers have been submitted during the current transfer window, and Romano stressed that Fernandes is not engaged in any talks. His attention, according to the journalist, remains firmly on Manchester United.
The discussion around Fernandes’ future was reignited after an emotional interview released in December. In it, Fernandes admitted he was hurt after discovering the club had considered selling him last summer, despite the manager wanting him to stay.
He explained that although he could have left for more money or greater chances of silverware, he chose to remain out of loyalty and affection for the club. Fernandes also highlighted conversations with the manager as a decisive factor in his decision.
As the summer approaches, questions over Fernandes’ long-term role at Old Trafford are expected to resurface, particularly with uncertainty surrounding United’s next permanent managerial appointment. For now, Romano’s update confirms that Fernandes remains central to United’s ambitions as they chase European football.
