‎Flamengo Hint at Vinicius Jr Dream Return After Lucas Paqueta Transfer Shock

‎Flamengo’s sporting leadership has humorously suggested Vinicius Junior could be a future transfer objective following the headline-grabbing return of Lucas Paqueta. At Paqueta’s official introduction in Rio de Janeiro, the club’s sporting director made a playful comment aimed at Real Madrid, joking about potentially signing the Brazilian superstar for free while hinting that reuniting former academy players is part of a long-term idea.

‎Paqueta’s unveiling created a celebratory mood as supporters welcomed back one of Flamengo’s most cherished former players. However, Jose Boto quickly became the focus of attention after making a joking remark that reflected the club’s growing confidence. With uncertainty reportedly surrounding Vinicius’ contract talks at Real Madrid and Flamengo successfully beating European interest to sign Paqueta, Boto hinted that more big moves could happen.
‎“Next, we will speak with Vini Jr’s team,” Boto joked, prompting laughter from reporters. He then smiled toward president Luiz Eduardo Baptista and jokingly asked when the player’s contract ends, suggesting Flamengo could sign him without paying a transfer fee.
‎Even though the comment was made jokingly, it highlights Flamengo’s belief that they can attract top Brazilian players back from Europe. Vinicius and Paqueta came through Flamengo’s youth academy together, and fans still hope to see both stars reunited at the Maracana.
‎Paqueta’s transfer from West Ham is considered a major achievement for South American football, particularly because of his experience and quality in the Premier League. Boto explained how difficult the deal was and emphasized that Paqueta’s determination to return was crucial.
‎Boto said the transfer proves how much the player cares about Flamengo, revealing that between 10 and 15 European clubs were interested at the same price level. He stressed that Paqueta played a major role in ensuring the deal was completed.
‎The director acknowledged that although Flamengo’s finances are strong, they still cannot compete directly with Europe’s wealthiest clubs. The transfer depended heavily on Paqueta convincing his representatives to make the move possible. Boto said that from a sporting perspective, the deal would not have happened without the player’s efforts and support team.
‎Boto also praised Flamengo’s financial progress under president Luiz Eduardo Baptista. He shared details about the club’s financial difficulties just a year earlier when he first joined.
‎He said that when he arrived, Flamengo had only R$5 million (£680,000) available in cash, which made him nervous. He credited Baptista for transforming the club’s financial strength and allowing them to operate confidently in the transfer market.
‎Bringing Paqueta back shows a level of financial power that very few clubs outside Europe’s elite leagues can demonstrate. It also reflects a strategic shift, with Flamengo now focusing on buying established stars rather than mainly selling young prospects, aiming to dominate both the Copa Libertadores and domestic competitions.
‎Boto also highlighted the tactical benefits of signing Paqueta, noting that Flamengo needed players in several positions. Paqueta’s ability to play multiple roles allowed the club to solve several tactical needs with one signing.
‎He described the signing as one that made an impact across Europe and admitted there were doubts about whether it would succeed. However, Paqueta’s versatility across four or five positions made him a key addition to Flamengo’s squad.
‎Boto suggested that Paqueta’s signing likely completes most of Flamengo’s transfer activity for the window, joking that there may not be much more business to do. With Paqueta secured and Vinicius mentioned as a future dream, Flamengo supporters have growing confidence in the club’s future.
