The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star underwent knee surgery in December 2025 to address a persistent problem, following a year-long absence due to anterior cruciate ligament damage. Since returning to his boyhood club Santos, Neymar has been rediscovering his enjoyment for the game, agreeing to a contract that extends through the end of the calendar year.
A recall to the national squad remains a top priority for Neymar, who has not played for Brazil since October 2023. Speaking to CazeTV, he explained, “I don’t know what the future holds for me. It’s possible that in December I’ll want to retire. I’m living day by day. This year is crucial, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and for me.”
Neymar is confident his fitness has returned, noting that he took time off during certain matches to ensure a complete recovery. “Santos has put an excellent plan in place regarding this. I wanted to come back at 100%, pain-free and fear-free. I managed to come back well in the last match. One day at a time, I’ll reach full form,” he added.
As Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals and 128 caps since 2010, Neymar’s inclusion in the 2026 World Cup remains a topic of debate. Former World Cup winner Kleberson urged his selection, stating that Neymar’s unique talent is unmatched in Brazil. “Even if he isn’t at 100% fitness at the start, he can still produce well. The things Neymar can do with the ball make him scary to mark. He’s the closest to Ronaldinho I’ve seen,” Kleberson said.
Brazil, drawn in Group C, will begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco at MetLife Stadium on June 13, followed by matches against Haiti in Philadelphia and Scotland in Miami. Neymar’s form and fitness will be crucial as the Selecao pursue another World Cup title.
