The 25-year-old has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers during a season marked by inconsistency. Although negotiations over a possible extension are reportedly taking place, Szoboszlai’s existing contract still has three years remaining, expiring in 2028.
Szoboszlai addressed the media following Liverpool’s emphatic 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday night, a result that ended the Reds’ league winless run in 2026. Even with the victory, Liverpool remain sixth in the table, trailing both Manchester United and Chelsea, who also picked up wins over the weekend.
The Hungary captain has contributed eight goals and seven assists across all competitions this season while operating in multiple roles. Though naturally a central midfielder, Szoboszlai has also featured on the right side of midfield and has even been deployed at right-back when required.
While reaffirming his desire to extend his stay on Merseyside, Szoboszlai conceded that the outcome is no longer solely in his hands. Previous reports have linked him with interest from Real Madrid, and it is widely believed several top clubs would pursue the midfielder should talks with Liverpool reach an impasse.
When questioned about progress on a new deal, Szoboszlai was honest in his response. “Nothing yet, to be honest. Nothing, from now on ... it is not in my hands. It works this way,” he explained. “There is no progression but if the right offer comes then let’s see.”
He continued by stressing his affection for the club and surroundings. “Let’s see what happens, hopefully everyone will be happy at the end. Of course [I want to stay]. I like the city, I like the club, I like playing with these guys, I love Anfield, I love the fans. It is not on me. I would love to [stay].”
Szoboszlai also discussed filling in at right-back during the Newcastle match following injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong. He made it clear the position is not a long-term solution in his mind. “I’m a midfielder,” he said, adding that he expects to return centrally once Liverpool’s defensive options are fully fit.
He noted that Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones are now available to cover the role, giving the team additional flexibility.
Reflecting on his personal ambitions, Szoboszlai emphasised his relentless drive to improve. He highlighted his desire to continue increasing his goal and assist numbers while competing for trophies, describing that mindset as central to his upbringing and career progression.
Under head coach Arne Slot, Szoboszlai has become one of the most relied-upon players in the squad. Alongside Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, he has frequently been among the first names on the team sheet, featuring in 33 matches across all competitions and being substituted only twice.
Slot has openly praised the Hungarian’s versatility and work rate, even suggesting comparisons to Steven Gerrard represent the highest form of praise. The Dutch manager particularly highlighted Szoboszlai’s defensive contributions, stating that his off-the-ball work has consistently impressed, especially during matches against Aston Villa and Real Madrid earlier in the season.
Liverpool will be hoping to reach a positive resolution in contract talks soon. For now, attention turns to a major Premier League showdown against Manchester City at Anfield next weekend.
