Rashford has rediscovered strong form at Barcelona following his earlier period at Aston Villa. Playing in Spain, he has produced four goals and six assists in La Liga, alongside five goals and three assists in the Champions League. Despite his success abroad, Meulensteen believes the relationship between Rashford and Manchester United remains strong because of his history as an academy graduate.
Speaking to BetGoat, the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson explained that players developed through a club’s youth system maintain a special bond that rarely disappears. He stated that Rashford still identifies strongly with United because of his upbringing within the club structure.
Meulensteen also defended Rashford’s decision to leave Manchester United, saying the moves to Aston Villa and later Barcelona were beneficial for both his career and personal growth. He compared the situation to Scott McTominay, another academy graduate who found success away from United after winning Serie A with Napoli. The coach believes playing outside England has helped Rashford rediscover enjoyment in football.
He explained that adapting to new cultures, languages, and tactical styles can refresh players mentally. Meulensteen added that the Premier League’s physical and psychological intensity can be overwhelming, while La Liga presents a different type of challenge that currently suits Rashford’s strengths. Above all, he emphasised that enjoying football again is vital for the forward.
While discussing a possible return, Meulensteen also addressed why Rashford left United originally. During his final months at the club, Rashford struggled with confidence and happiness under managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. Meulensteen suggested that internal issues at the club may have contributed to Rashford losing his passion at that time.
He acknowledged that Manchester United still perform well in the Champions League but insisted that significant internal changes have taken place. He questioned what circumstances caused Rashford to lose motivation for a club he once loved deeply.
Looking forward, Meulensteen believes time apart may have helped repair relationships. With Rashford performing well in Spain and Manchester United moving into a new phase, the possibility of reconciliation exists. However, he stressed that any reunion would depend on open, honest conversations between Rashford and the club leadership.
