Arne Slot Slams Liverpool After 4-0 FA Cup Exit to Manchester City

A short but decisive spell proved costly. Within 20 minutes, Liverpool conceded four goals, allowing Manchester City to seize complete control. Erling Haaland led the charge with a hat-trick, while Antoine Semenyo added another to ensure their place in an eighth consecutive semi-final.
Slot expressed deep frustration after the match, particularly with how his team defended during that period. He stated that such defensive displays make winning impossible, especially when the same issues continue to resurface. The manager also pointed to a broader pattern of inefficiency at both ends of the pitch.
According to Slot, Liverpool’s inability to capitalise on chances has been a consistent problem. Even though they do not concede frequently, the goals they do allow often prove decisive. He stressed the need for stronger defending inside the box, something he believes was clearly lacking in this match.
Mohamed Salah, featuring after announcing he will leave the club at the end of the season, endured a difficult outing. He failed to convert several opportunities and saw his penalty saved in the second half by James Trafford. The miss followed a similar moment against Galatasaray in the Champions League prior to the international break.
Even so, Slot chose not to place responsibility on one player. He insisted the issues are collective, referencing missed penalties from both Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai this season. He also pointed to a missed first-half chance for Salah during a quick counterattack as another key moment.
With elimination from the FA Cup confirmed, Liverpool’s domestic cup hopes are over, adding to their earlier Carabao Cup exit. The focus now turns entirely to Europe, where a demanding quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain awaits.
Slot emphasised the need for a strong reaction. He acknowledged that his team showed they could compete for parts of the game but warned that lapses like the one that cost them heavily must be addressed immediately.
The Liverpool manager also highlighted the significance of the upcoming Champions League tie. He described it as a crucial opportunity in a season that has not gone to plan, underlining the importance of mental strength as his team prepares to face PSG once again.
