'I Won’t Make It to 32': Rodri Fears Career Cut Short by Injuries and Overloaded Football Calendar

‎Rodri has voiced serious concerns about his long-term future, warning that the current football schedule could force him out of the game sooner than expected. The Manchester City midfielder, who recently suffered another injury setback, described the fixture list as excessive and damaging.

‎The Ballon d’Or winner indicated that the physical demands placed on players have reached a critical point. At 29, and having already dealt with significant injuries such as an ACL tear, he believes the intensity of modern football is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
‎Having played a central role in both club and international success over recent years, Rodri admitted that the toll of constant competition is beginning to show. He suggested that without meaningful changes to reduce the number of matches, extending his career beyond 32 may not be realistic.
‎During an appearance on DAZN’s Premier Corner, the Spain international spoke openly about the situation. He made it clear that action is needed to safeguard players, warning that the current system risks cutting careers short.
‎“Either we stop or I won’t make it to 32,” he said. “You have to know how to pace yourself, because the body has its limits and we all have an expiration date.”
‎Rodri also shed light on the mental strain that accompanies sustained success at the highest level. After Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024, he revealed that years of reaching the decisive stages of competitions had left him mentally exhausted.
‎He explained that following that achievement, he struggled to find the energy and motivation required for the seasons ahead. The burnout, he noted, was more psychological than physical, highlighting the cumulative impact of competing at elite level for several consecutive years.
‎While critical of the current demands, Rodri has taken advantage of his time away from the pitch to recover and regain focus. He is now working toward a full return, aiming to be in top condition for the next World Cup, where he hopes to play a key role for Spain. Manchester City’s medical team continues to oversee his rehabilitation as he prepares for his comeback.
