Following his absence, Fernandez is now back in the squad for Saturday’s encounter at Stamford Bridge. The Argentina international had missed the previous two fixtures due to a club-imposed ban linked to remarks about his future and reported interest from Real Madrid.

Providing an update before the match, Rosenior confirmed the 25-year-old has impressed since returning to training. He explained that Fernandez has fully reintegrated with the group and delivered strong performances in sessions, making him eligible for normal selection. The Chelsea boss also highlighted the positive atmosphere within the squad and praised the midfielder’s dedication and work rate.

The suspension stemmed from Fernandez publicly addressing speculation about a possible move to Real Madrid. He admitted uncertainty about staying at Chelsea beyond the summer and spoke about an ambition to live in Spain’s capital. Rosenior responded firmly at the time, stating the player had crossed a boundary, especially while stepping in as captain during Reece James’ absence.

During the two matches Fernandez missed, Chelsea experienced contrasting outcomes. They recorded a commanding 7-0 win over Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals but then suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City in league action. His return is expected to strengthen a midfield that struggled for control in that loss.

Rosenior also addressed the condition of other players, noting that Trevoh Chalobah is nearing full fitness. The defender, sidelined since the Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, has resumed training on the pitch, although not yet at full intensity. A final decision on his involvement is still pending.

However, Reece James remains unavailable, with the manager confirming the captain is still some distance from returning following the injury he picked up against Newcastle.

There was encouraging news regarding Levi Colwill, who continues to recover from a serious ACL injury. The young defender is set to gain match experience with the Under-21 side in a closed-door friendly as he builds fitness.

Rosenior expressed optimism that Colwill could feature for the senior team before the season ends but emphasized the importance of ensuring he is fully prepared before reintroduction.

Chelsea will host Manchester United in a significant clash that could influence the race for Champions League qualification. Sitting sixth on 48 points, the Blues have an opportunity to narrow the gap on third-placed United, who currently hold 55 points.
