'Right Decision': Markus Babbel Supports Mohamed Salah Liverpool Departure
Mohamed Salah is approaching the end of his Liverpool journey, and former defender Markus Babbel believes the timing of his departure is appropriate given recent performances.
The Egyptian forward, widely regarded as a club icon, has endured a challenging campaign that has drawn criticism from former players. While his tally of 12 goals and nine assists remains respectable, it represents a noticeable decline from the elite output he produced in previous seasons.

Babbel, speaking to EPL Index, suggested that Salah’s influence has diminished and argued that his displays have not matched the high standards expected of him. He also pointed to a perceived disconnect with head coach Arne Slot, noting that the forward did not appear fully comfortable in the current setup.
The former Germany international went further, stating that he would have removed Salah from the starting line-up earlier in the season. He emphasised that while poor performances can happen, the lack of visible effort for the team stood out as a major concern.
Even so, Babbel acknowledged that Salah’s contribution over the past decade secures his place among Liverpool’s all-time greats. His achievements and consistency over the years have cemented his reputation, regardless of recent struggles.
As attention turns to the future, financial factors are expected to shape Salah’s next move. Babbel indicated that a switch to Saudi Arabia could align with the forward’s earning ambitions, while suggesting that European clubs may find it difficult to match those demands.
With just five matches left, Salah still has an opportunity to end his Liverpool career on a positive note. Having recently scored in a 2-1 derby victory, he will be aiming to maintain momentum as the club looks to finish the Premier League season strongly.
