The former Chelsea midfielder believes the Blues need proven winners to guide their talented young players after another disappointing Premier League campaign. According to Cole, Stones and Lewandowski would provide the leadership and mentality currently missing from the dressing room at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso set for Chelsea takeover
Chelsea are preparing for a fresh start with Xabi Alonso officially set to become the club’s new manager in July. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder has signed a four-year contract after being chosen to replace Liam Rosenior, whose spell in charge ended last month.
Despite assembling a squad filled with costly young talent, Chelsea finished tenth in the Premier League, raising further questions about the team’s balance and leadership structure.
Cole believes the club should avoid major changes to the squad and instead focus on bringing in experienced players capable of mentoring younger teammates while maintaining stability within the group.
Stones and Lewandowski identified as ideal additions
Cole singled out John Stones and Robert Lewandowski as perfect candidates to help Chelsea rebuild a winning culture.
Stones recently ended a hugely successful spell at Manchester City, where he won six Premier League titles and lifted the Champions League trophy. Lewandowski, meanwhile, became available after his prolific time at Barcelona, during which he scored 120 goals in four seasons.
Speaking to football.london, Cole said: “We don’t know what the finances are. So it’s alright saying that we’re going to buy that player and buy that player. We may have to sell players, we don’t know. One thing we’re sure we don’t want is wholesale changes because these young players that you had belief in three years ago: they’re still the same players.”
Cole demands more experience inside the squad
Cole argued that Chelsea’s current squad lacks the leadership needed to compete consistently at the highest level. He believes experienced players can help guide younger teammates during difficult moments on the pitch while also reinforcing a stronger team culture.
“They just need what I’ve been saying for two or three years, where you have experience around them within the group that helps them through games to coach them, whilst on the pitch to give them their wisdom, you know, and build it out that way,” Cole added.
“And then you bring in your John Stones and Robert Lewandowski and players on a free transfer who don’t need to play every minute of every game, but they understand winning, they understand culture and they can still help out in the pitch and do bits.”
Warning over Chelsea’s future
The former England international also warned Chelsea’s hierarchy that the team could struggle to progress without experienced voices inside the dressing room.
Cole stressed that elite teams are built on internal leadership, not just tactical direction from managers and coaches.
“The current players need that, they’ve got it within the group, it can’t be from coaches, all the time. All the great teams are coached from within their own dressing room and its knowledge and wisdom passed down over the years,” Cole concluded.
“It just baffles me how people just don’t understand that. But hopefully, they [the Chelsea owners] have read the room and that’s the way they go now. When you get to elite level, you need experience, you need wisdom and you need quality.”
