Manchester City Women sack Gareth Taylor, appoint Nick Cushing as 'Interim Manager'

In a major shake-up, Manchester City Women have confirmed the departure of manager Gareth Taylor, with Nick Cushing stepping in as interim boss. The decision follows a series of disappointing results, despite City’s strong position in the Women's Super League (WSL) and FA Cup.

As of now, Manchester City sits in fourth place in the WSL, with just six matches left in the season. Recently, the team secured a spot in the FA Cup semi-finals after a solid 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. However, despite this success, recent performances have not met the club’s high standards. City also has a challenging series of upcoming fixtures, including matches against Chelsea in the League Cup, WSL, and the Champions League quarter-finals.

Club Managing Director Charlotte O'Neill addressed the change, stating, "Manchester City is committed to competing at the highest level in the WSL and maintaining a strong presence in European competitions. Unfortunately, results this season haven’t been up to our usual standards. With six games remaining in the WSL, we believe a managerial change will give the team the boost needed to secure a spot in next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. We thank Gareth for his contributions and wish him all the best for the future."

Taylor, who joined the club in 2020, had notable successes, including leading the team to an FA Cup victory in his first season and a League Cup triumph in 2022. Despite narrowly missing out on the WSL title to Chelsea last season, the team’s form this year has been disappointing, leaving them one point behind Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification.

With significant matches ahead, including four encounters with Chelsea over the next few weeks, Cushing returns to the club to manage the team temporarily. Having previously managed Manchester City Women, Cushing will lead the team through this crucial period as they strive for success in the League Cup, WSL, and Champions League.

Manchester City will now look to turn their fortunes around under Cushing’s guidance, with hopes of maintaining their Champions League ambitions for next season.
